It was a hot summer’s evening in Edinburgh’s East End and a queue had started to form outside the door that led to a former jazz club called the Abano on the top floor of the graceful Georgian style building on the corner of Waterloo Place and Leith Street.

Gradually the queue grew until it stretched round into Leith Street, passing the entrance to Rutherfords Bar and down towards Leith Walk.

Most of those waiting in the queue were 4th 5th and 6th year pupils from Broughton Secondary School who had heard on the school grapevine that a band consisting entirely of fellow students were playing.

Word had spread over the previous few weeks that the band had started regular Saturday night session and were beginning to attract large crowds playing the music of the Stones, The Animals, Manfred Mann, Chuck Berry and the Beatles  .

The group were The Hipple People
